Hydrogen-powered railcars are transforming regional rail service in Germany. These environmentally friendly trains run on fuel cells and generate their own electricity from hydrogen. They emit no CO2 during operation. As a result, they are gradually replacing conventional diesel-powered trains on non-electrified routes.

For testing purposes, the hydrogen-powered railcar 563 002 is operating on the Bayerische Regiobahn network, running from Augsburg to Peißenberg and Füssen. Stefan von Lossow captured the rare vehicle near Weilheim on February 3, 2026.
